The American Indian College Fund introduces our newest blanket series - the Curtis Blanket Collection. Based on images takenby Edward S. Curtis, the renowned photographer who recorded thousands of Native people at the turn of the 20th century, the collection features Navajo and Hidatsa tribal designs.
Using two Curtis photographs as inspiration, both blankets incorporate design elements that appear in the original photographs, as well as added traditional tribal imagery.
The Hidatsa Earth blanket, which was taken from a 1908 photograph, embodies the earth and sky by using traditional colors to combine mountain, star and grass symbols.
Designed by the College Fund and manufactured by Pendleton Woolen Mills, the foremost manufacturer of American Indian trade blankets in the world, each blanket is made with virgin wool.
