"Portraits of Contemporary Native Americans and America's Tribal Colleges"

A new hardcover book published by the American Indian College Fund provides an epoch-making look at contemporary American Indian culture highlighting 37 people who have been at the forefront of Indian education. Photos by highly respected portraitist Andrea Modica are presented with first-person narratives of these educational pioneers. All have a tie to the tribal college movement. Students, educators, administrators and graduates who participate in myriad professions are shown as they actually are - representing their deeply layered and complex culture. Acclaimed author Sherman Alexie provides the book's introduction.

It is the Fund's hope that this book and its stories will eradicate stereotypes of American Indians, bringing to light their contributions to their own people as well as to the society as a whole. This book celebrates an important movement, described by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement for Teaching as "under funded miracles" changing the face of Indian education.
